Intersection Daylighting

OUR GOAL:

To improve traffic visibility & safety and support stormwater infrastructure & placemaking at intersections in the New Marigny.

OUR ASKS for City Councilmember Freddie King III (District C):

  1. To engage New Marigny residents and stakeholders to understand intersection-related risks and concerns, survey daylighting infrastructure preferences, and create community buy-in for neighborhood improvements.
  2. To turn all blind and partially visibility intersections in the New Marigny into full visibility intersections by replacing illegal parking spots with community-supported daylighting strategies. Strategies may include stormwater infrastructure, planters, flex posts, bike racks, etc.
PROBLEM: Blind Intersections in the New Marigny

The City of New Orleans restricts parking within 20ft of intersections. Cars parked within 20ft obstruct visibility and increase risk of crashes for everyone navigating the intersection.

Blind intersections are especially dangerous in the New Marigny, since the neighborhood is bordered by some of the city’s busiest and most crash-prone avenues: Elysian Fields, St Claude, St. Bernard, and N. Claiborne.
